Arborvitae Maintenance

ARBORVITAE MAINTENANCE

  • ARBORVITAE MAINTENANCE

  • Water newly planted trees 2-3 times a week for the first few months. Once established, they only need extra water during prolonged periods of drought.
  • Water deeply during dry spells, but allow the soil to become almost dry between watering to prevent root rot.
  • Use stakes for support as newly planted arborvitaes are vulnerable to wind.
  • Plant trees approximately three feet apart to avoid root crowding.
  • Fertilize when the needles are not their normal healthy color or when new growth is sparse.
  • Remove any dead branches or branchlets, making a clean cut with bypass pruners.
  • The best time to trim your arborvitae is early spring, just before the growing season begins.

ARBORVITAE FUNGI

Arborvitae needle blight is a disease that can be caused by two fungi: Phyllosticta and Pestalotiopsis. This disease can be a significant threat to the long-term health of many trees.

ARBORVITAE SPIDER MITE

Horticultural oil, insecticidal soap and neem oil are three "organic" sprays labeled for mite control on arborvitae. All three are available at most garden centers. These kill mites by smothering them as opposed to poisoning them.
